15th November 1878 Greytown, Natal Letter to Mama

We were kept waiting at Pietermaritzburg for transport until last Thursday and in much discomfort because everything was packed up and we were ordered to start whenever the wagons arrived. They turned up at about 4 o’clock on Thursday afternoon so we started an hour later in a heavy rain, but the roads were so slippery we only went a mile or two out of town before halting for the night. It took us five days to come this little distance on account of the incessant rain, which is very welcome all the same.

This is a pretty little village with about 20 houses but the number of troops that have been here have eaten up everything and there is not an egg or any vegetables to be had.

We provided ourselves with three months stock of provisions before starting as we shall have no opportunity of getting anything at all when we once leave here. I don’t believe that the General will ever be able to advance beyond the Frontier as it is impossible to move sufficient supplies for the number of troops required.
